The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 39 new coronavirus-related deaths and 713 new cases on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Officials blamed the reduced number of cases, and their late arrival Tuesday, on technical problems with data-reporting systems.

The numbers lifted the county’s totals since the pandemic began to 290,009 positive cases and 6,912 deaths.

Officials said 2,913,000 individuals have now been tested, with 9% testing positive.

The number of people hospitalized with the virus was listed as 730, up from 722 on Monday but down from 752 on Sunday. About 30% are being treated in intensive care units.

The report did not include numbers released earlier by the cities of Long Beach and Pasadena, which operate their own health departments. Pasadena’s nine new cases raised its total to 2,692; its death toll remained at 129. Long Beach reported 89 new cases, increasing its total to 12,754, but its death toll stayed at 255.

The Department of Public Health reported that inspectors who fanned out across county over the weekend found the majority of the 437 businesses visited were in compliance with health protocols. Others, however, were falling short, with nearly half failing to post detailed information about the protocols enacted at the business. Gyms visited by inspectors “need to improve on ensuring their employees and patrons are wearing a face covering,” according to the county.

“Because COVID-19 is still spreading throughout L.A. County, businesses have a duty to protect employees, customers and residents from transmission of COVID-19 as much as possible and implement all requirements in the business protocols that prevent COVID-19 transmission,” according to a statement from the county.
