An East Los Angeles woman was charged Wednesday, June 30, with killing her three children two days after their bodies were discovered inside the bedroom of their home, authorities said.

Sandra Chico, 28, whose arrest was announced Tuesday morning, faces three counts each of murder and assault on a child causing death, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

She was scheduled to make her first court appearance Wednesday afternoon.

The children were found dead inside the home on the 600 block of South Ferris Avenue about 12:45 p.m. Monday, authorities said. Chico was also at the home with another relative and was arrested after she was questioned by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives.

The cause of death for the three children was not yet known. They were identified by coroner’s officials as Mia Camilla Rodriguez, 4, Mason Mateo Rodriguez, 3, and Milan Mateas Rodriguez, who was seven-weeks old.

“In an instant, three innocent children were taken from us and we are crestfallen,” District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement. “Nothing is more heartbreaking than the tragic betrayal of a parent failing to protect their children.”

A motive was not yet known and the father of the children was not home at the time of their deaths. Sheriff’s Lt. Charles Calderaro said Monday first-responders did not find obvious signs of trauma to the children.

Sheriff’s officials have said they had received no prior calls to the home regarding child abuse or child neglect. Neighbors have said they never noticed fighting at the house and recalled seeing the children jumping on the trampoline in front of the home or chasing their dog through the front yard.

Chico remains jailed on $2 million bail.
